The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Thursday, August 1, allowed central universities to conduct their own entrance exams or admit students based on marks in qualifying exams if seats remain vacant in undergraduate and postgraduate courses after admission through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
However, UGC said that CUET scores will remain the primary criteria for the admission process. The commission stressed that students who have appeared in CUET can be considered regardless of which domain subject paper they have appeared in.
The Higher Education Standards Maintenance Commission highlighted the need to fill the vacant seats, giving two reasons.
“Keeping seats vacant for the entire academic year is not only a waste of resources but also deprives many students aspiring to pursue higher education in central universities of quality higher education,” UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar told PTI.
“Therefore, in order to facilitate central universities in filling their vacant seats, SOPs have been formulated. Students who appeared in CUET but may or may not have applied to the concerned university earlier for courses or programmes may also be considered,” the report quoted Kumar as saying.
The UGC chairman said that universities can also admit students based on their marks obtained in the qualifying exam. The higher education authority further explained that the entire admission process should be based on merit and transparency. Meanwhile, the reservation roster should be applicable for admission to courses/programmes in all cases.
