In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Himalayan Siddha Akshar, founder of Akshar Yoga Center, gives a guide to incorporating yoga into your summer routine to stay hydrated and suggests starting with hydrating poses. He recommends beginning your practice with poses that promote hydration and blood circulation, such as –

1. Trikonasana (Triangle Pose):

This asana stretches the sides of the body, increases blood circulation and promotes detoxification.

2. Padahastasana (Standing Forward Fold):

Forward bends stimulate digestion and help regulate fluid balance in the body.

3. Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose):

Backbends like the cobra pose stimulate the kidneys and adrenal glands, aiding in proper hydration.

4. Shavasana (Corpse Pose):

Practicing Shavasana in a cool, shady place can help lower body temperature and achieve relaxation.

To stay cool, Himalayan Siddha Akshar recommends incorporating foolproof cooling asanas to beat the heat and avoid overheating –

1. Shitali Pranayama (Cooling Breath):

In this breathing technique, breath is inhaled through a folded tongue or pursed lips, thereby cooling the body from within.

2. Focus on liquidity:

Emphasize fluid movement and transitions between postures to keep the body limber and prevent stagnation.

3. Stay hydrated throughout:

Keep drinking water at regular intervals during exercise to replace fluids lost through sweat.

For mindful hydration, Himalayan Siddha Akshar says, “Practice mindfulness while drinking water, focusing on the sensations of hydration and expressing gratitude for the nourishment the water provides.” Incorporate pranayama (breathing exercises) techniques that support hydration, such as:

1. Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing):

Balances the body’s energy channels and promotes overall health, including hydration.

2. Shitali Pranayama (Cool Breathing):

It involves breathing with the tongue folded or the lips pursed, which cools the body and calms the mind.

Speaking about diet and rest, Himalayan Siddha Akshar said, “After your practice, continue to prioritize hydration by drinking water and consuming hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables. Listen to your body: Pay attention to signs of dehydration during your practice, such as dizziness or fatigue, and take appropriate measures to rehydrate. Rest and replenish: Allow time for rest and recovery after your practice so your body has the opportunity to replenish fluids and recover from the heat. By incorporating these yoga postures and exercises into your summer routine, you can support hydration, prevent dehydration and enjoy a refreshing and invigorating practice even during the hottest months of the year.”
