Hindi imposition line: Union Minister L Murugan has hit out at Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin for advising couples to name their children with “Tamil names” to avoid imposing Hindi in the south Indian state, ANI reports.
Responding to Stalin’s remarks, Murugan on October 23 accused the ruling political party – Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of “discrimination”, the report said. The Union Minister also questioned: “Is Udhayanidhi Stalin a Tamil name?” Told the Deputy CM to first follow his advice in his family.
Controversy over ‘Tamil names’ comment
“Is Udhayanidhi Stalin a Tamil name? First of all, they should keep Tamil name in their family. No one is imposing Hindi in Tamil Nadu…those who are willing to study Hindi language can study. Why are you objecting?” Murugan said.
“DMK means discrimination…they talk about social justice but they will not follow it,” he said. Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi is taking Tamil language across the world…Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is trying to mislead people…He should not do politics in the name of language…”
‘The statement was distorted and presented wrongly’
On October 22, Deputy CM Stalin said that his statements were “falsely distorted”.
“I also mentioned the principles given by Periyar, Perarignar Anna and our leader Kalaignar. But my statements were distorted and now I have been sued in many courts not only in Tamil Nadu but in India. They asked me to apologize in court, but I refused. I have said, ‘What I said has been said.’ I am the grandson of Kalaignar and I will not apologize for anything. Now I am facing charges. Our Dravidian model government is a shining example for other states…” he clarified.
Why the controversy?
Controversy erupted after Udhayanidhi Stalin said that couples should keep Tamil names for their children to avoid imposition of Hindi in the state.
“I request the newlyweds to keep a beautiful Tamil name for their baby. Because many people are trying to impose Hindi in Tamil Nadu. They couldn’t do it directly. That is why they are removing some words from Tamil Thai Vazhthu (state song). They are trying to impose Hindi through the new education policy. But they are all failing. Already someone had tried to change the name of the state from Tamil Nadu. But due to objection on this in the entire state, he apologized. Now some people are talking about removing the word ‘Dravidam’ from Tamil Thai Vazhthu,” said Udhayanidhi Stalin.
“As long as the last cadre of DMK is alive, as long as the last Tamil is alive, no one can even touch Tamil, Tamil Nadu and Dravidam. Tamil Nadu will never accept imposition of Hindi…” he said.
