In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. Abhijeet Bhograj, Advisor Endocrinologist, Manipal Hospital Hebbal said, “Hypothyroidism is particularly common, and its symptoms are often ignored or incorrect for other conditions.”
Initial warning signal of hypothyroidism:
Hypothyroidism, also known as an underactive thyroid, is the condition when the thyroid gland is unable to produce a sufficient amount of thyroid hormones to meet the needs of the body.
Hypothyroidism is marked:
- Constant fatigue even after all night sleep.
- Dilute or damage hair in the skull. The skin can be dry despite regular care, and many individuals report muscle cramps and joint pain without obvious reasons.
- Digestive issues such as constipation can arise, and sleep disturbances can occur from excessive sleep to sleep quality.
- Other signs include unexplained weight gain, more frequent than others, feeling excessive cold, irregular or heavy menstrual cycle, and even low mood or depression that does not react well to treatment. Also read Thyroid Health: 5 tips to manage functions, disorders and thyroid wellness

Initial warning signal of hyperthyroidism:
Hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid refers to the condition when the thyroid gland produces more thyroid hormones than the body requirement. It leads to rapid metabolism, which can affect many physical functions.
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism are:
- Even on sharp or unexplained weight loss when hunger remains normal or increases.
- Individuals often develop heat intolerance, excessive sweating, and can feel unusually warm in the evening.
- A sharp or irregular heartbeat is common with anxiety, irritability and frequent bowel movements.
- Some may experience subtle shock in hands.
“Hypothyroidism slows down the body’s systems, while hyperthyroidism speeds them, sometimes quite dramatic. If you remain with three or more symptoms of these, it is intelligent to undergo a thyroid hormone evaluation, including T3, T4 and TSH levels,” Dr. Abhijat Bhograj said.
