Congress’ Lok Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam constituency, Kantilal Bhuria, on Thursday courted political controversy over his “two wives” comment. “He who has two wives will receive.” If the grand old party comes to power, Rs 2 lakh will be given,” he said while addressing an election rally in Ratlam.
He also talked about the ‘Mahalakshmi Yojana’ announced in the Congress manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections 2024, which states “one woman from every poor household”. 1 lakh annually.
Congress will give under Mahalakshmi scheme 1 lakh per year as unconditional cash transfer to every poor Indian family. This amount will be deposited directly into the bank account of the oldest woman in the house. The declaration states that in the event of his absence, it will be transferred to the account of the eldest member of the family.
‘An objectionable comment’
State BJP spokesperson Narendra Saluja criticized the Congress party over Bhuria’s “two wives” statement and asked the Election Commission of India to take action on the matter. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the BJP leader wrote, “What an objectionable comment…”
Saluja said, “…the comment made by Congress candidate from Ratlam Kantilal Bhuria about the head of the country, he represents the 140 crore people of the country…this is the petty thinking of the Congress…Election Commission should take cognizance and take action.”
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala also criticized Bhuria, saying the Congress’ aim was to encourage individuals whose personal laws allow multiple marriages.
He posted on the microblogging site, “Congress’s Kantilal Bhuria exposes the distorted version of Congress’s “Jitni Abadi Utna Haq” scheme/guarantee. This is not about women respect but about treating women like an object. I’m…disgusting.”
“Congress says, if you have multiple marriages – you can get Rs 1 lakh per wife.. If you have two wives – 2 lakhs..etc.. 4 wives, so you can calculate… Kantilal Bhurai wants to give guarantee to those people whose personal law encourages multiple marriages and wants to encourage more population of his vote bank, ” They said.
Kantilal Bhuria, who is contesting on Congress ticket, will face BJP’s Anita Chauhan, wife of MP Forest Minister Nagar Singh Chauhan. Voting will be held in Ratlam on Monday 13 May.
Lok Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh are in four phases. The first phase of voting ended on 19 April, followed by the second phase of voting on 26 April and the third phase of voting on 7 May. The final phase for the state is scheduled for May 13, covering eight constituencies: Dhar, Dewas, Ujjain, Mandsaur, Ratlam, Indore, Khargone and Khandwa. Counting of votes will take place on June 4.
