National Award-winning filmmaker Luit Kumar Burman on Wednesday, May 29, filed a complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his controversial remarks against Mahatma Gandhi during an interview, calling it “highly derogatory” and an “insult” to the Father of the Nation.
Luit Kumar Barman has filed a complaint at the Hatigaon police station in Guwahati. However, the police have said that no FIR has been registered in connection with PM Modi’s remarks against Mahatma Gandhi.
In his complaint, the filmmaker said, “This is a very derogatory statement and cannot be accepted by any citizen of India. As citizens, we cannot tolerate the insult of Mahatma Gandhi. He does not need any film to introduce him to the world…”
It further said that by comparing Mahatma Gandhi to a film, “Narendra Modi has defamed Mahatma Gandhi as well as the people of India. Therefore, I request you to take action against Narendra Modi under the relevant sections of the law.”
In an interview to ABP, PM Modi said, “Mahatma Gandhi was a great person all over the world. Was it not our responsibility in these 75 years to ensure that the whole world knows Mahatma Gandhi. I am sad to say that no one knows about him. For the first time when the film ‘Gandhi’ was made, there was curiosity all over the world about who this person was.”
Prime Minister Modi’s remarks on Mahatma Gandhi have sparked widespread outrage in public and political circles.
National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah said the remarks were “shocking”. He said the prime minister “feels ashamed” to praise Mahatma Gandhi even though both of them hail from Gujarat.
Rahul Gandhi took a dig at PM Modi citing his educational qualifications. He said, “Only a ‘complete political science’ student needs to watch the film to know about Mahatma Gandhi.”
Congress’ Jairam Ramesh said, “I don’t know what world the outgoing Prime Minister lives in, where Mahatma Gandhi was not recognised worldwide before 1982. If anyone has destroyed the legacy of the Mahatma, it is the outgoing Prime Minister himself. His own government has destroyed Gandhian institutions in Varanasi, Delhi and Ahmedabad.”
