Your gut is also responsible for your overall health. Therefore, what you eat every day can have a significant impact on your overall health. While eating whole foods is important, an important part of our diet also consists of everyday beverages, including water, tea, coffee, and others. Therefore, it is essential to understand how they affect our body.

In a December 3 Instagram post, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford University, shared important health facts you should know about these everyday drinks.
9 things to know about everyday beverages
Dr. Sethi captioned the post, “I’m a gut doctor and here are 9 things I hate about everyday beverages. Which everyday beverage do you think is helping or hurting your gut the most?” Here’s what he has to say about drinking cold water, avoiding drinking fruit juices and much more.
1. Hot water > ice cold
According to Dr. Sethi, it is better to drink warm or room temperature water than drinking ice cold water. “Cold drinks can temporarily slow down digestion. Start your day with warm or room temperature water to maintain bowel motility,” she explains.
2. Coffee is a bowel stimulant
Gastroenterologists warn against drinking excessive coffee as it can interfere with bowel movements and concentration. “Too much (especially on an empty stomach) can cause reflux, urgency and anxiety,” he explained.
3. Green tea is underrated
Dr. Sethi explains the benefits of drinking green tea for the gut, saying, “It is anti-inflammatory, supports metabolism, and balances gut bacteria. Additionally, L-theanine calms your brain while caffeine keeps it alert.”
4. Skip the juice, eat fruits
We all know that eating fruits is better than drinking their juice. Here’s why: “Juice = tons of sugar with no fiber. Whole fruit = fiber and antioxidants that your gut microbes actually use.”
5. Kombucha isn’t always a healthy drink
According to gastroenterologists, some brands of kombucha are loaded with sugar. Therefore, you should look for drinks with ‘5 grams of sugar per serving’, or stick to plain kefir or yogurt drinks.
6. Herbal Tea = Functional Medicine
“Turmeric, ginger and fennel aren’t just soothing. They soothe inflammation, reduce inflammation and help repair the gut lining,” says the gastroenterologist.
7. Chia or basil seed drink aids digestion
According to the expert, chia and basil seeds absorb water to form a gut-friendly gel that nourishes your good bacteria, making them great for promoting regularity and fiber.
8. Alcohol harms your gut period
Even small amounts of alcohol disrupts gut bacteria, increases permeability (leaky gut) and disrupts sleep, Dr. Sethi said. So, he suggests, “If you drink alcohol, hydrate well and limit intake.”
9. Eat leafy herbs
Leafy herbs may be small, but they’re mighty for your gut health. “Mint, cilantro, parsley and basil contain polyphenols that aid digestion and nourish the good bacteria,” said Dr. Sethi. He suggested eating them raw rather than cooking them and using them generously, not just as a garnish.
