NASA’s perseverance Rover has added new clues in search for life on Mars. It has indicated in Martian rocks that remind scientists of life -related situations on Earth. The new study was published in nature.
In July 2024, it drilled a mudstone core called Shevaya Falls from Neelam Valley in Neelam Valis, an ancient river channel. It found minerals and textures similar to those on Earth that are often formed with microbial activity.
However, scientists have warned that natural chemistry can also explain them.
NASA’s administrator Sean Dafi said, “This discovery by perseverance is the closest that we have ever come to search for life on Mars. The identity of a possible bioscnecher on the red planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and a one who will carry forward our understanding of Mars,” NASA’s administrator Sin Dafi said.
Dafi said, “NASA’s commitment to conduct gold standard science will continue as we carry forward our goal of putting American shoes on Mars’s rocky soil.”
The core sample is now sealed for a possible return to Earth for advanced testing.
Joel A of Stony Brook University. Hurovitz led the study, describing the mudstone texture and nodule, which is informally called “leopard spots”. Instruments Sherlook and Pixel detect organic carbon with phosphate, iron and sulfur to replicate the pattern.
The study said, “A striking feature seen in Cheywa Falls Target (and the same Sapphire Canyon Core Sample) is different spots (informally referred to the Mars 2020 Science team as ‘leopard spots’), which is circular to crane dark-tone rims and lighter-tond core.”
Two minerals stand out: Vivianite and gregite. On Earth, they are often rich in water, affected by germs in oxygen-poor sediment.
Vivianite makes blue-green nodules where germs reduce iron. Links to gregite sulfate-reduction bacteria. In the martian sample, Vivianit RIMS surrounded the Gragite-rich core, which is similar to the Earth’s microbial reactions.
Although it does not prove life on Mars, the rocks of the bright fairy show the conditions with microbial activity. Scientists say that this is a cautious but exciting step in search of life on Mars.
Does it prove life on Mars?
NASA officials take care of new Mars findings. Nikki Fox of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate said, “This is not a life.”
According to Fox, it is only a possible bioscnecher.
Hurrowitz resonated: “We cannot claim that it is more than a possible bioscnecher.”
At the same time, Duffy keeps the options open.
“This can be very well the most obvious sign of life that we have ever found on Mars,” he said.
