A 17-year-old student of a private pre-university college in Kolar district of Karnataka gave birth to a baby on campus on Monday, reports the Indian Express. Police officials have confirmed that the Class 11 student gave birth to the baby in the women’s toilet.
Soon after the birth, the girl and her newborn were rushed to a hospital for medical attention. The girl’s parents later lodged a complaint at the Kolar Women’s Police Station, following which the police took immediate action. A police officer confirmed that they have registered a case and launched a search operation to nab the accused.
According to the police, a complaint was filed under Section 376 (2) (n) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which deals with aggravated sexual assault and serial rape of the same victim.
Investigation revealed that the girl and a boy were in a relationship for the past two years. Despite the girl being pregnant, it is not clear how her family did not know about her condition or why she chose to hide it. “As soon as the girl recovers after the delivery, we will talk to her with the help of a female counsellor,” The Indian Express quoted a police officer as saying.
Police said although the case was registered after the new criminal law came into force, the alleged crime took place nine months ago, making the new law not applicable to the case.
Earlier this year, a similar incident was reported in Karnataka where a Class 9 student of a government residential school allegedly gave birth to a newborn boy in a hospital, following which a rape case was registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and POCSO. The 14-year-old girl was staying in the hostel of a government boarding school in Tumakuru district.
