China has successfully launched its first sea-based rocket of the year, marking a significant step in its commercial space exploration ambitions. On Monday, January 13, 2025, a Smart Dragon-3 carrier rocket lifted off from the water near Haiyang, Shandong province, delivering ten Centispace-01 satellites to their intended orbits.
According to a report byIndia TodayThe Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center monitored the mission, which highlighted China’s growing strength in maritime rocket launches. Liu Wei, deputy chief designer of Smart Dragon-3, underlined the significance of the event, noting that it was the first low inclination orbit launch conducted from offshore waters near Haiyang.
Reportedly, this strategic location was selected to increase operational security, reduce navigation costs, and streamline technical preparations.
The Smart Dragon-3, developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, is a commercial rocket designed to meet the growing demand for launching small satellites into low-Earth orbit, the publication said.
Measuring 31 meters in length and weighing approximately 140 tonnes, the rocket boasts of an impressive payload capacity. The mission carried a record-breaking payload of 1,600 kilograms, the heaviest ever for Smart Dragon-3, the report said.
According to the report, the payload included satellites for space environment data acquisition and intersatellite laser networking tests, further strengthening China’s commitment to advancing satellite technology and space exploration.
Since 2019, Haiyang has emerged as a hub for sea-based launches, with a total of 89 satellites successfully launched into space with 15 missions. According to media reports, the Smart Dragon series plays an important role in China’s strategy to become a major player in the global commercial satellite launch market by combining technological innovation with cost-effective solutions.
This latest achievement reaffirms China’s dedication to expanding its space capabilities, setting the stage for further advances in satellite deployment and exploration in the years to come.
