There is some historical story behind every festival and folk festival celebrated in India, which gives a glimpse of the cultural heritage of our country, which is being celebrated in our country for generations. One such folk festival is Chherchhera, which is mainly celebrated in Chhattisgarh.

Chherchhera will be celebrated on 13th January this year
Chherchhera festival is celebrated with great pomp and gaiety in Chhattisgarh on the day of Paush Purnima. This year in 2025, Chherchhera will be celebrated on Monday, 13 January. It is also called Chherchhera Punni or Chherchhera Tihar. It is considered a festival of giving and receiving donations. It is believed that by donating on this day, there is no shortage of money and grains in the house. On this day in Chhattisgarh, children and adults go from door to door to receive donations of food and youth perform Danda dance.

Everyone says chherchhera…’Mai kothi ke dhaan la herer hera’
Celebrating this festival, groups of children and elders ask for donations by singing a unique song. While taking donations, children say ‘Chher chhera mai kothi ke dhaan la herer hera’ and until the women of the house donate food, they will keep saying ‘Aran baran kodo daran, jabbhe debe tabbhe taran’. This means that the children are saying, mother, donate, we will not go until you donate.

The importance of this festival is linked to the new crop.
Chherchhera festival is celebrated in Chhattisgarh when the farmers have harvested and milled the crops from their fields and stored the grains (new rice) in their homes. This festival is the festival of giving donations. After working hard in their fields throughout the year, farmers celebrate Chherchhera festival by donating their hard-earned paddy. It is believed that giving charity is an act of great virtue. With this belief, farmers celebrate Chherchhera festival to participate in the great virtue by donating the paddy grown by their hard work.

On this day, children go to all the houses in their village and ask for donation of food grains by saying ‘Chherchhera’ and donate food grains to everyone in all the houses by taking them out from their ‘kothi’ i.e. granary. The village children form groups and go from door to door asking for chherchhera. Apart from children, women, men and elderly people of all sections of the village go from door to door in groups to celebrate Chherchhera festival and ask for Chherchhera donations.
