Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren has dismissed speculations of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The senior Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader termed the news as a rumour and said that he is not going anywhere.
“I don’t know what rumours are being spread. I don’t know what news is being run, so I can’t say whether it is true or not, I don’t know anything about it…we are where we are,” Champai Soren told reporters on Saturday.

Responding to questions about leaving JMM and joining the saffron party, Soren said he was not aware of any such rumour and added that he was where he was.
Champai Soren replaced Hemant Soren at Raj Bhavan on February 2, 2024 to become the 12th Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Later, he resigned as Jharkhand CM on July 3 after Hemant Soren got bail after being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. JMM working president Hemant Soren took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand on July 4.
Assam CM Himanta Sarma said on Champai Soren joining BJP
Amid Champai Soren’s silence on the matter, there has been no clear confirmation or statement from any BJP leader. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also refrained from making any “casual comment” on the matter.
“Nobody is in touch with us as of now. I am also hearing these reports from the channels. Champai Soren is a very senior leader and I don’t want to make any informal comment about him,” Himanta Biswa Sarma was quoted as saying by ANI.
Jharkhand Legislative Assembly Election
Jharkhand assembly elections are scheduled to be held in November and December this year. Ahead of the state assembly elections, BJP, JMM and other parties have started working at the ground level and have started making election strategies.
Last week, the BJP held a meeting of all its district presidents. Election in-charge and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan also attended this meeting virtually. Other senior BJP leaders like Himanta Sarma, Babulal Marandi also participated in this discussion.
The saffron party has prepared its election strategy. Former Jharkhand BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Deepak Prakash said on Saturday that whether to include Soren in the party or not will entirely depend on the central leadership.
He said, “I have heard this only in reports. I do not have any authentic information… He (Champai Soren) was serving Jharkhand as a good CM… Everything depends on the central leadership.”
