Following the protest, the central government withdrew its order to dissolve the Senate-Syndicate of Panjab University. The Education Ministry issued a formal statement on Friday.

Following the political and academic uproar over the Centre’s decision to dissolve the Senate-Syndicate of Panjab University, the Central Government has announced the cancellation of its order. In a release issued on Friday, the central government has withdrawn its notice of October 28.
In the previous notification, the government had talked about dissolving the top governing bodies of Panjab University and setting up nominated structures in their place. Several stakeholders, including the state government and the academic community, expressed concern over the Centre’s orders.
The official notice issued by the Ministry of Education (MOE) read, “On the basis of the recommendation of a High Level Committee (HLC) constituted by the Chancellor of the University on 02-03-2021 and in consultation with various stakeholders, the Government of India has, under sub-section (1) read with sub-sections (2) and (3) of Section 72 of the Punjab Reorganization Act, 1966 (31 of 1966), provided by Issued a notification in exercise of the powers to amend the constitution and composition of the Senate and Syndicate of the Punjab University.”
The ministry announced the cancellation of the previous notice and said, “After the issue of the order, various responses were received from stakeholders such as students, teachers, former VCs and current VCs of Panjab University. The Ministry of Education also considered the inputs received in the meeting with various student organizations. In view of the above, it has now been decided by the Ministry of Education that the above order changing the constitution and composition of the Senate and Syndicate shall be cancelled.”

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday announced that the state government will approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the Centre’s notification dissolving the Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University, Chandigarh.
