State Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj said here on Tuesday that the Central Government has sanctioned Rs 676.70 crore for infrastructural development of various universities and colleges in Odisha under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA).
Speaking to reporters here, Suraj said that out of Rs 676.70 crore, the state will bear Rs 268 crore (40 per cent) while the Center will provide the remaining Rs 408.70 crore (60 per cent).
This fund is sanctioned under various components, including Multi-disciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERU), Grants for Strengthening Universities (GSU), Grants for Strengthening Colleges (GSC) and Gender Inclusion and Equity. He said that Rs 100 crore each have been sanctioned for Berhampur University; Maharaja Shriram Chandra Bhanja Dev University, Baripada; Ravenshaw University, Cuttack; and Sambalpur University, under the MERU component of the scheme.
Similarly, under the GSU component, Vikram Dev University, Jeypore, Odisha State Open University, Sambalpur, Kalahandi University, Bhawanipatna, Rajendra University, Bolangir and Gangadhar Mehar University, Sambalpur will get Rs 20 crore for infrastructure development, Suraj said. Said.
He said the education ministry has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for each of the 24 colleges under the GSC component, while five districts – Kandhamal, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Nabarangpur and Sambalpur – will get Rs 10 crore for gender inclusion and equity initiatives.
He said that provisions have also been made under the PM-USHA scheme for development of classrooms, laboratories, libraries and hostels and making the infrastructure accessible to persons with disabilities.
Additionally, higher educational institutions can purchase software and hardware to enhance digital education, the minister said.
To attract more female students, higher educational institutions can offer skill development, career building and self-defense training under the Gender Inclusion and Equity Initiative component of the Central Scheme.
He expressed hope that the implementation of the scheme will improve the NAAC ranking of higher educational institutions in the coming years.
The minister said the government is working on implementing the National Education Policy 2020 to make educational institutions multidisciplinary and students to adapt to global standards.
Meanwhile, Berhampur University Vice-Chancellor Gitanjali Dash said, “We are happy as the central government has approved the much-needed project for the overall development of the university.”
“The funds will help the university create better infrastructure and increase research output, thereby putting the university on the map as a top-tier institution,” he said. This fund will be utilized over the next five years, he said.
Calling MERU a big gift from the central government to Berhampur University, which celebrated its foundation day on January 2, local MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahi thanked Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for giving his approval to release the much-needed funds. Gave. university.
