Beauty is pain, this saying has been repeated over and over again, making it a well-accepted notion that has to be endured, like an unusual neighbour or your partner’s weird hobby. But as the estimated US$646.20 billion beauty industry continues to grow and is dominated by celebrities, pop sensations and social media breakout stars, the saying is taking on a whole new meaning. Beauty is no longer about pain – it’s been reduced to where you can’t even feel it anymore (hello, numbing creams, ultra fine needles and more); but it’s getting weirder.

Hey man, what’s going on here?

Recently, Brazilian model Débora Peixoto caught people’s attention, and not in a good way, as she shared a video of herself using feces on her face. She believes it will help “prevent anti-aging.” The influencer has previously gone viral for giving herself a facial using her menstrual blood. She managed to influence other women to try it out and post about it on social media.

With that, the hits keep on coming. Peixoto even put a bit of her feces in a jar and kept it in her fridge! In the Instagram video, she wrote, “The craziest thing I’ve ever done in my life I put my feces on his face now he’s [read sensible partner] Doesn’t want to be around me lol I saw a study about it and decided to try it! It worked for me, my skin stopped flaking!”

And it looks like she has done it again, as other TikTok users are following her too.

don’t get tired

Now, it’s not common for skincare and wellness enthusiasts to put poop on their faces; take snail mucin, which has become very popular over the last year. It’s a mucus-like substance secreted by snails that helps them glide across surfaces. It’s been used as far back as ancient Greece for inflammation and anti-aging.

Another popular product, literally, is the steamed beet of the nightingale bird. With fans such as actor Tom Cruise and fashion designer Victoria Beckham, this face mask is made by mixing it with rice bran and water. First used by the Koreans, they introduced it to the Japanese, from where it got its name – the Geisha facial. These Japanese performing artists used Uguisu no fun as their makeup remover to remove their thick white makeup and soothe their faces. Uguisu is the name of the bird species – the Japanese Warbler, and “no fun” translates to “bird feces”. Guanine is the building block of DNA and RNA and is found in the beet

This poop facial is one of the most extreme facials that has created a lot of buzz online as a swarm of bees swarmed over it. However, there are some other bizarre beauty trends too that have been endorsed by celebrities. Take a look here:

Salmon Sperm Facial

For starters, media personality and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian has had a salmon sperm facial and talked about it on her family’s reality TV show, The Kardashians. “I had a salmon sperm facial where salmon sperm was injected into my face,” she said, speaking to her mother and manager Kris Jenner.

Last year, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, actress Jennifer Aniston revealed she has also tried it. “At first, I asked, ‘Are you serious? How do you get salmon sperm?'” Aniston said. Known as salmon PDRN aka polydeoxyribonucleotides, it’s extracted from salmon sperm. Research has shown it has some benefits, which is why celebs are getting it injected into their faces, usually via microneedling.

Period Blood Facial

On social media, give something that is likely to trend a cute nickname, like Pookie, Brat Summer, Hot Girl Walk, Girl Dinner, Barbie-core, and you get my point. Called menstrual masking or moon masking, social media users are applying their period blood as masks to get better and clearer skin, access to stem cells, and even feel a deeper connection to their bodies. When #PeriodFaceMask was trending, many dermatologists came out to explicitly warn people against the practice.

Penis facials

In case you have to look it up again to read it again, yes, some actors have been known to get penis facials and talk about it. Before your mind wanders, actor Cate Blanchett told Vogue Australia that she and her Ocean’s 8 (2018) co-star Sandra Bullock got penis facials at Georgia Louise Atelier in New York when asked, ‘What’s the most unique beauty treatment you’ve ever tried?’

Blanchett said, “Sandy [Bullock] And I saw this facialist… and what she does is what we call a ‘penis facial’… I don’t know what it is, or it’s just because it smells like sperm – there’s some enzyme in it.”

The Hollywood EGF (epidermal growth factor) facial uses stem cells collected from the foreskin of newborn babies. “The foreskin is collected during circumcision and then the stem cells are harvested and extracted through a centrifuge,” Lewis said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Later, Lewis clarified on social media, saying: “We are not using the original stem cells, only clones!! Stem cells [given] At a stem cell bank in Korea!!!!”
