News agency PTI quoted sources on Friday as saying that the Education Ministry has asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to prepare logistics for conducting board exams twice a year from the next academic year i.e. 2025-26.
The report said the move is aimed at making board exams stress-free and providing more opportunities and benefits to students. The report said that the plan to introduce the semester system has been rejected.
The report further said that the Education Ministry and CBSE will discuss with school principals in May to conduct board exams twice a year.
Currently, CBSE is working on how the academic calendar will be structured to accommodate the second set of board exams without affecting the undergraduate admission schedule.
PTI quoted a source as saying, “The ministry has asked CBSE to work out how the board exams will be conducted twice a year. The board is working on the modalities and will meet with school principals next month.” A consultation will be held along with.”
The new National Curriculum Framework (NCF) released by the ministry in August last year also proposed that students be given the option to take their board exams twice a year.
Two editions of the year-end board exams are being considered from the 2025-26 academic session, but the modalities still need to be worked out. However, there are no plans to implement the semester system,” the report said.
“CBSE is currently brainstorming on the schedule to provide maximum benefit to students and achieve the goal of making board exams stress-free. However, logistics is a challenge that needs to be addressed, conducting exams is tedious So the plan is to be flawless,” the source said.
Earlier in October last year, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had told PTI that it would not be mandatory for students to take board exams twice a year.
“Students will have the option to appear for the exam twice a year (Class 10 and 12 boards) like the engineering entrance exam JEE. They can choose the best score… but it will be completely optional, there will be no compulsion. “
