“The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, enacted in 1985, is India’s main legal framework to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking. It imposes stringent penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty, for serious offences involving large quantities of drugs. Additionally, the Act promotes treatment and rehabilitation of drug-dependent individuals. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) enforces the Act in coordination with various agencies, and classifies penalties based on the quantity involved – small, medium and commercial. Special provisions also allow for the confiscation of properties linked to drug trafficking, while the PITNDPS includes stringent measures to detain individuals to prevent the illicit drug trade. The penalties vary according to the offences falling under various sections of this Act,” the official press release explained.
CBSE informed that the board plans to sign a MoU with NCB to create awareness about drug abuse in all CBSE affiliated schools.
