The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a notification regarding students who have studied Basic Mathematics in Class 10 in the academic year 2023-24 but want to study Standard Mathematics in class 11 in the academic year 2024-25.
While allowing Basic Mathematics student to study Standard Mathematics in Class 11, the official notification of CBSE states, “In the past, CBSE has allowed students studying Mathematics to study Standard Mathematics in Class XI/XII (041). Allowed to offer Rs. Basic) in class 10th due to the Covid pandemic.”
Several changes are proposed due to the NEP for the session 2024-2025; Therefore, after detailed deliberations, the Board has decided to continue with the academic session 2024-25 only.
As per the previous rule, students who opted for Basic Mathematics in Class 10 were not allowed to take Mathematics subject in Class 11. These students had the option of studying applied mathematics, not standard mathematics.
CBSE further said that schools have to ensure that candidates have the aptitude and ability to pursue mathematics.
The official notification by CBSE states, “Students who have offered Mathematics Basic (241) are also allowed to offer Mathematics Standard (041) in Class 11. Such students are allowed to offer Mathematics Standard (041) in Class 11 “Before granting permission, the Head of the Institution/School must be satisfied that the students have the aptitude and potential to pursue Mathematics Standard (041) in Class 11.”
The notification asks Class 10 students of the academic year 2024-25 to select the subjects carefully, as the board will not allow students to make any further changes after selecting the subjects in the LOC.

It is important to note that in 2019, CBSE introduced the concept of two tiers of mathematics for classes 11,12. Standard Mathematics was introduced for students who wanted to choose Mathematics (041) in class 12 and Basic Mathematics (241) was for those who were not interested in pursuing mathematics at a higher level. Students who were offered Basic Mathematics in Class 10 are allowed to take only Applied Mathematics in Class 11.
