The development comes a day after the Centre ordered cancellation of the UGC NET exam amid serious questions being raised over the “integrity” of the exam.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday registered an FIR in the UGC-NET exam paper leak case under sections of criminal conspiracy and cheating. More sections may be added based on further investigation into the case.
The development comes a day after the Centre ordered cancellation of the UGC NET exam amid serious questions being raised over its “integrity”.
Earlier in the day, the Union Education Ministry handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI. In a press conference, Joint Secretary of the Education Ministry, Govind Jaiswal said that at first glance, the government feels that there has been rigging in the examination.
Jaiswal said, “No complaint has been received but the information we have received from the agencies shows that the sanctity of the exam has been compromised. This action has been taken suo motu to protect the interests of the students.”
He said, “Nine lakh students had appeared in the UGC-NET exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on June 18. The ministry found that there was a possibility of malpractice in the exam. The ministry has decided to cancel the exam. The next date will be announced soon. The matter has been handed over to the CBI.”
On Wednesday, the Union education ministry ordered the cancellation of UGC-NET after receiving reports that the sanctity of the exam had been compromised. A new exam will be conducted, for which information will be shared separately.
The NET exam was cancelled amid allegations of question paper leaks in states like Bihar and other irregularities in the prestigious NEET exam. These allegations led to protests in several cities and petitions were filed in several high courts as well as the Supreme Court.
