A newborn baby was stolen from Bihar’s Begusarai Sadar Hospital on Sunday, 20 hours after its birth. The incident, which is going viral on social media, was captured on CCTV.
In the CCTV footage, a 50-year-old woman wearing a red sari enters the Special Newborn Care Unit (NSCU) of the government hospital. Moments later, the woman picks up the baby, wraps it in a cloth and then walks out of the NSCU.
The possibility of the involvement of someone from the hospital insider in the incident cannot be ruled out as the woman was seen taking instructions from someone who is not visible in the footage.
According to NDTV, a baby was born to Nandini Devi, a resident of Lohia Nagar in Begusarai, at 10:30 pm on Saturday. When the family reached the hospital at 7 pm on Sunday, they found the newborn missing and the mother told them that the nurse had not handed over the baby to them. The report said that the father of the missing child last saw his son at 2 pm.
Dr. Pramod Kumar Singh, Civil Surgeon of Begusarai Sadar Hospital, acknowledged the seriousness of the situation.
“A lot of people enter the premises, making it difficult to identify and separate the child’s mother from other relatives,” NDTV quoted Dr Singh as saying.
No hospital staff could explain how the baby disappeared from the childcare unit. It was only when officials checked the CCTV footage that they realised the baby had been stolen.
The incident has sparked unrest at the hospital, with the family demanding the immediate return of their child and expressing disappointment at the security lapse.
According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a child goes missing every eight minutes in the country and 40% of these children are never found.
