Humans are social creatures, so the innate compulsion to socialize and share is irresistible. Has there ever been a time when you look forward to meeting your best friend and sharing everything from the latest updates of your love life to work troubles? Venting provides instant relief, as if a weight has been lifted from your shoulders.

But do you often have a habit of casually sharing the stresses of your life to more distressing events that may be uncomfortable or even unwanted for the listener? Does this also apply to acquaintances? The increase in conversations is extreme – from light conversations about work stress or skipping Pilates classes, for example, to heavy and upsetting conversations like parental neglect and abandonment. It continues regardless of how the listener feels about it.

This is trauma dumping and it puts the listener in an awkward position. In an interview with HT, Dr Aarti Anand, senior consultant in psychiatry at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, explained more about trauma dumping and how to avoid it.

Understanding Trauma Dumping

Dr. Anand emphasized that there is a fine line between venting and trauma dumping. He elaborated by saying that this unsolicited sharing of disturbing situations, without checking whether the listener is ready to engage, is often driven by a desire for empathy at its core. Dr. Anand studied in depth the mental mindset of a person with trauma dumping.

lack of introspection

They share their perspective without a strong need for validation, regardless of whether the listener may find it persuasive or not.

“Trauma dumping happens when you don’t want or don’t have the ability to self-reflect or bring responsibility and accountability to your side of the story,” Dr. Anand said. It’s just to get the other person’s attention and validate your feelings and thoughts.”

telling a one-sided story

Telling your experience to someone who was not involved is easy, because they only hear one side of the story and are more likely to believe it.

“Trauma dumping seems like a very easy and simple way to express one side of a story without criticizing, reprimanding, or shaming,” Dr. Anand explains.

due to later

When someone shares more, they understand that the listener is empathetic and a good listener. The purpose here is twofold. The first is to find such listeners, as Dr. Anand said: “People look for empathetic and good listeners to process their trauma, because empathetic and sensitive people will feel sorry for them and actually want to help them.” Will try.”

Their sob story makes the listener feel pitiful, but as Dr. Anand points out, many people take empathetic people for granted, using their warmth and compassion for selfish reasons. They may ask for unfair benefits or requests, making it difficult for the listener to say no.

When you feel like the person you’re talking to has strayed from the conversation and steered it toward a more intimate, personal discussion with heavy, painful elements, speak up immediately if you’re not comfortable.

“Set boundaries by telling the person that they do not have the ability to listen at this time and ask the person to change the subject,” Dr. Anand said. Also, be mindful of the length of the conversation or step back when necessary.”

Sometimes unconsciously, people can draw on their own traumatic experiences and confide in someone they met only an hour ago. Perhaps a topic or word sparked those heavy memories, but does that mean you should overshare everything?

Dr. Anand posed an important question for those who frequently take trauma dumps. “Practice self-reflection by asking yourself whether you are looking for advice or just a listener. This will help you prepare your conversation better.

In addition, he reminded that people who engage in activities such as journaling, meditation or listening to music are more likely to recognize what causes them trauma. Sharing can certainly lighten the emotional load, but revealing personal trauma doesn’t have the same impact. Dr. Anand suggested seeking professional counseling from a clinical psychologist or psychotherapy if something is particularly stressful.
