(Bloomberg) — Former central banker Mark Carney resigned as chairman of Brookfield Asset Management after joining a campaign to lead the Liberal Party of Canada.
“Mark has been a tremendous partner to the firm since joining nearly five years ago,” Chief Executive Officer Bruce Flatt, 59, who has been named board chairman, said in a statement. The statement also praised Carney’s work leading Brookfield. “Energy Transition.”
Carney, 59, also said at a news conference in Edmonton, Alberta, that he has resigned from all his corporate roles, including chairman of Bloomberg Inc., to focus on politics. His resignation means he is no longer head of transition investments at Brookfield.
While Carney built up the firm’s transition investment business, the renewables unit’s CEO — Connor Teskey — has been in day-to-day control for the past four years, according to a person familiar with the matter. The company would not name the new head of Transition Investments, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to confidentiality of the matter.
Carney previously served as Governor of the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada.
In September, Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre attacked Carney and criticized Brookfield for agreeing to help Justin Trudeau on economic policy.
Before his globetrotting career in finance, Carney grew up in Edmonton, where his family came from the remote Northwest Territories. Carney’s father ran unsuccessfully for the Liberals in Edmonton in 1980.
