Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a cardiologist and heart-transplant specialist with advanced expertise Heart Failure and Mechanical Circulatory Support, says Thanksgiving is the time of year when he often sees patients with preventable heart failure experiencing flare-ups. In an Instagram video posted on Nov. 27, he outlined five key signs to look for after Thanksgiving — signs that your heart is under stress and could be headed for failure.

As a cardiologist who treats heart failure patients every day, Dr. Yaranov says Thanksgiving is unfortunately one of the peak seasons for preventable flare-ups. He explains, “Every year around this time, I see the same pattern in my heart-failure clinic: Patients who were doing well suddenly start feeling ‘sad’ even though nothing dramatic has happened. The holidays change routines — food, sleep, travel, stress — and for someone with heart failure, even small shifts can add up quickly. What feels like ‘just a little extra’ can become a real strain on a heart that’s already working hard.’

He highlighted five things to keep in mind while enjoying the holiday season with your loved ones, to prevent any unwanted complications.

According to Dr. Yaranov, eating high-sodium foods can cause fluid retention which can lead to heart failure in susceptible people. He explains, “Gravy, stuffing, canned broth, ham, most restaurant dishes—they’re all loaded with salt, and fluid goes where the salt goes. A salty dinner can be enough to trigger an overnight congestion or agitation.”

Difficulty breathing, especially after a heavy meal, can be an early warning sign of heart failure. Dr. Yaranov recommends paying attention to your breathing after a large meal. “Eating large amounts of food can increase venous return and put a strain on the heart.
