Do you make up for lost sleep on weekends? A new study says it may help reduce the risk of heart disease.

We all know that getting at least 7 hours of sleep is essential for a healthy lifestyle. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine also recommends the same. However, many of us struggle to adopt this healthy habit due to several reasons, including our fast-paced lifestyle and unhealthy habits. But, if you make up for these lost hours during the weekend, there is good news for you. According to a study presented at a recent meeting of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), sleeping late on weekends can reduce the risk of heart disease by 20 percent.

Get some sleep: Study says sleeping more on weekends may lower heart disease risk

The new report was presented by study author Yanjun Song of China’s National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases. The research states that getting adequate sleep reduces the risk of heart disease. They found that this effect is notable in people who regularly experience insufficient sleep on weekdays.

The researchers studied 91,000 participants, divided into four roughly equal groups based on who slept the least and who slept the most. The team then calculated each participant’s risk of heart disease and followed them up for 14 years after their initial assessment, examining their personal hospital and death records, for evidence of coronary artery disease, heart failure, heart rhythm irregularities and stroke.

What were the results?

The study found that the group that slept the most on weekends were 19 percent less likely to develop heart disease, and those who were sleep-deprived on weekends and got enough sleep had a 20 percent lower risk of developing heart disease.

However, the authors of the ESC study noted some factors that limited their research, including that 75 percent of participants did not report getting less than seven hours of sleep during the week. Additionally, the data relied on individuals reporting their own sleep habits, which may not be accurate. They also failed to take into account the forms of treatment many participants received during the 14 years between assessments. For these reasons, the study is of limited use.
