Cannes 2024: Bella Hadid honored her Palestinian heritage at the Cannes Film Festival by making fashion her medium. The supermodel recently stepped out in Cannes and gave a deeper meaning to her off-duty style by wearing a vintage 2001 Michael and Hushi gown, designed entirely from a red and white keffiyeh. Keep scrolling to see her outfit for her day out in the French Riviera city.
Bella Hadid wears a keffiyeh dress in Cannes: What is a keffiyeh?
For those who don’t know, the keffiyeh is a traditional Arab headdress that has become a symbol of Palestinian culture, identity, and resistance. At pro-Palestine protests around the world during the Israel-Hamas war, protesters have worn the keffiyeh around their necks or used it to cover their faces. By wearing this dress, Bella, who has been vocal about her support for Palestine and has worn vintage dresses during the Cannes Film Festival, has combined her love of vintage clothing with her advocacy for Palestine.
The vintage Michael and Hushi keffiyeh dress is from their old archive. Bella shared photos of the original dress first shown on Instagram, captioning it, “#michaelandhushi @hushi5 Archival keffiyeh dress from 2001. Free Palestine forever.” According to Hushidar Mortezai (the label’s co-founder), Michael Sears made the keffiyeh dress and pattern by hand.
Meanwhile, Bella’s dress is adorned with red and white patterns. It features spaghetti straps, a plunging neckline, a ribbon tie at the bust, a cut-out at the front, embellished tassels at the border and below the bust, a figure-hugging silhouette, ruffled tiers and an asymmetrical hemline. She styled the ensemble with gold hoop earrings, a dainty bracelet, rings, tinted sunglasses and peep-toe blood-red sandals.
Bella completed her look with stunning eyebrows, rouge on the cheekbones, glowing skin, pink lip shade and bronzer on the contour. Lastly, she tied her hair in a pulled back low bun and accessorized it with a white floral hair accessory.
