How to prevent Thalassemia in infants: The doctor recommended 4 stages that each couple should know.

In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. Kunal Shegal (Hematopathologist and Flow Cytometritist Director in Newbers Sehgal Path Lab) and Dr. Subhasha Sanyal (Director at Fortis Institute of Blood Disorder, Fortis Hospitalsin Mumbai) suggested –
1. Get the Thalassemia screening in pregnancy or first
- Carrier test If necessary, it can be determined by HPLC method or genetic testing whether one or both parents take Thalassemia genes.
- If both are parents, then one is one 25% chance Thalassemia will be prominent in his child.
2. Look for genetic counseling
- A genetic consultant can explain risk, heritage patterns, and reproductive options when both parents are carriers.
3. Consider the prenatal test
If pregnancy is already running:
- Chorionic willus sampling (CVS)(10-12 weeks) or
- Ignorance (15–18 weeks) It can find out if there is Thalassemia in the fetus.
4. Increase awareness through education
High rates of Thalassemia benefit from public education and premiere screening programs, as premiere consultation and genetic testing are the only effective ways to prevent children from being born with Thalassemia.
