The term “digital dementia” refers to memory problems and cognitive decline caused by excessive dependence on digital devices such as smartphones, computers, etc. Given that the use of technology in our daily lives has increased significantly, it is important to understand the damage it can cause to our mental health, so there is a need to raise awareness about the potential problems associated with excessive dependence on gadgets and understanding digital dementia is imperative.

A 2022 study examined the relationship between total dementia risk and sedentary activities, such as watching television and using a computer, where regardless of the level of physical activity, the data showed that spending more time in cognitively passive activities, such as watching TV, increased the risk of dementia. Nevertheless, passive cognitively active activities, such as using a computer, were associated with a lower risk of dementia.

Another study highlighted that individuals who use screens for more than four hours a day are more likely to develop vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia from all causes. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Pawan Ojha, director of neurology at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital in Vashi, shared, “Spending more time in front of a screen each day has also been linked to physical changes in specific brain regions. The symptoms of digital dementia are comparable to those of dementia, including short-term memory loss, trouble remembering words, and difficulty multitasking.”

He revealed, “Constant multitasking and rapid information processing can lead to decreased memory, attention span and learning ability. It can also impact behaviour by increasing stress and anxiety. This is because excessive screen time can suppress other important activities that support cognitive and social development. Additionally, the blue light emitted from screens can disrupt sleep cycles, which can have an impact on memory consolidation and cognitive function. Constantly switching between things while using a device can make it harder to focus and concentrate.”

Noting that digital sources are a constant flow of information that can put a strain on the brain, Dr Pawan Ojha cautions that moderation is key to fighting digital dementia. Thus, the following actions can help you avoid screen time and combat the harmful effects of excessive technology use –

1. Limit phone notifications:

Reducing the number of notifications you receive can help you avoid spending all your time in front of a screen or on your phone. If a particular notification isn’t important, consider muting it or deleting it altogether.

2. Set a time limit for inactive media:

This can look different depending on how you spend your time. There are apps that can put time restrictions on excessive scrolling.

Dr. Pawan Ojha advised, “Also, if you are a parent trying to find strategies to reduce your child’s screen time, start by discussing the importance of moderation. Describe your efforts to reduce screen time, and practice tracking things and making adjustments as a family. Even small changes can have a significant positive impact on your health, whether you are looking for ways to reduce your personal screen time, or want to make changes with your family.”

The scientific literature lacks strong evidence that excessive screen time causes “digital dementia,” even though it may have some detrimental effects on cognitive function. For general cognitive health, it is important to use digital technology carefully and lead a balanced lifestyle.
