A recent study has shown that scrub typhus infection may be a “under-charity” major cause of hospitalization for fever, accounting for about 30 percent of cases.
The study conducted by Christian Medical College, Vellore and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) saw more than 32,000 persons from 37 rural areas in Tamil Nadu.
Scrub typhus infection is spread by an infected larvae mite (chigar) bite. Chigirs are found on grass, planting garbage and bare soil in rural areas of Asia, and usually feed small mammals such as mice and listeners.
Can scrub typhus cause death?
The scrub typhus is caused by the bacterial ‘Orientia Tsutsugamushi’, which belongs to the Rictesia family. Severe illness due to infection, if left untreated, can cause death. Rural areas in India are the most affected by possible life-drinking infections
Is scrub typhus dangerous?
Scrub typhus infection can affect many organs and give rise to acute respiratory crisis syndrome (ARDS), shock, meningitis and kidney failure. In rare cases, scrub typhus infection may result in intravascular coomopathy and hemophgocytic syndrome.
Scrub Typhus Symptoms and Treatment
According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), scrub typhus symptoms begin within 10 days of infection. Symptoms are:
-Bose pain and muscle pain
-The dark, scab -like area in a dark, cutting place
-Changes like municipal anxiety and coma
According to the CDC, scrub typhus should be treated with antibiotic doxycycline. Antibiotics are most effective if symptoms are given immediately after the onset. People who are treated on time using doxycycline usually have quick recovery.
Scrub typhus complications
Scrub typhus, if left untreated for a long time, can give rise to severe and fatal complications. These include, but many organs are not limited to dysfunction, pneumonia, acute respiratory crisis syndrome and death.
Scrub typhus test
Serological methods are the main to diagnose scrub typhus. Tests include wel-felix tests, indirect immunoflorescent antibody tests, indirect immunoparxides tests, enzyme-linked immunabsorbent assays, immunocromatographic tests and bacterial culture among others.
