According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 30-50% of all cancer cases are preventable and now is the time for us to talk about this disease, especially about those aspects that Can help reduce the risk of cancer Because although there is widespread recognition of the primary risk factors for cancer such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and dietary habits, one aspect that is often underestimated is that of the gut. Related to health, especially the gut microbiota. While traditional treatments remain important, emerging research points to an important role for the gut microbiome—our body’s microbial ecosystem—in cancer treatment and prevention.

Understanding the Gut Microbiome

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Debjyoti Dhar, Co-Founder and Director, Leucine Rich Bio, explains, “The gut microbiota, comprising trillions of microbes, orchestrates vital functions in our bodies including digestion, metabolism and immune regulation. Several studies suggest its profound effect on cancer development and treatment response. Through a delicate balance of beneficial and harmful microbes, the gut microbiome maintains homeostasis and contributes to overall health. Disruption of this balance, known as dysbiosis, is linked to various diseases, including cancer. Understanding the complex interactions within the gut microbiome provides valuable insights into cancer biology and therapeutic strategies.

Promise of preventive measures

Dr. Debjyoti Dhar revealed, “Research shows that approximately 20% of the global cancer burden is caused by pathogenic bacteria and viruses. By restoring gut health through dietary interventions, probiotics, or fecal microbiota transplantation, we can potentially reduce cancer risk and prevent tumorigenesis. Diet plays an important role in shaping the composition of the gut microbiome, with certain foods promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria.

He elaborated, “Fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, fermented foods and prebiotics nourish beneficial microbes while helping maintain microbial diversity while reducing consumption of processed foods and antibiotics. Probiotics, which contain live beneficial bacteria, can also restore microbial balance and support overall gut health. Additionally, fecal microbiota transplantation, a procedure in which fecal matter containing healthy microbes is transferred into the patient’s intestine, has shown promise in treating some gastrointestinal conditions and may have implications for cancer prevention.

increasing treatment efficacy

Dr. Debjyoti Dhar highlighted, “Certain gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium have shown the ability to enhance the effectiveness of cancer treatments such as immunotherapy and chemotherapy. By modulating the immune system and metabolizing drugs, these microbes could potentially enhance treatment outcomes while reducing side effects. For example, research has shown that specific bacterial strains can activate immune cells to more effectively target and destroy cancer cells. Harnessing these interactions may lead to personalized treatment approaches that optimize therapeutic benefits while minimizing adverse effects.

gut microbiome profiling

Dr. Debjyoti Dhar said, “A convenient method for anyone to gain information about their gut microbiota includes undergoing gut microbiome profiling, which provides a comprehensive understanding of their microbial composition and what one’s DNA is like. , no two individuals share the same composition of the gut microbiota. With testing kits like BugSpeaks, users can get a deeper understanding of their gut microbiota through their stool samples. Additionally, the user is provided personalized nutritional recommendations based on their unique gut microbiota and the presence or absence of relevant microorganisms.

Challenges and ideas

While the potential of the gut microbiome in cancer care is promising, Dr. Debojyoti Dhar pointed out that significant challenges remain. “Interdisciplinary collaboration, robust clinical studies, and stringent regulation are essential to ensure the safety, efficacy, and ethical implementation of microbiome-based therapies,” he said. The complex interactions within the gut microbiome create challenges in understanding its role in cancer development and treatment response. Furthermore, ensuring equitable access to microbiome-based interventions and addressing concerns related to safety and long-term effects are important considerations in advancing this field.

The expert concluded, “The discovery of the potential of the gut microbiome in cancer care represents a paradigm shift in our approach to prevention and treatment. As we celebrate National Cancer Prevention Month this February, it is essential to recognize the substantial impact gut health has on cancer risk and progression. By elucidating the complex dynamics of the gut microbiome and its impact on cancer biology, we uncover promising avenues for preventive measures and therapeutic interventions. From dietary modifications to novel treatments such as fecal microbiota transplantation, the potential to leverage the gut microbiome in cancer care is huge.
