Dr. Sudipto Dey, robotic cancer surgeon specializing in genetics and onco-nutrition at Metro Hospitals, Delhi NCR, dispels common myths about fasting and its role in cancer treatment. In an Instagram video posted on October 25, the oncologist talks about the misconception that fasting can help kill cancer cells during treatment, explains how it works for cancer prevention, and emphasizes the importance of nutrition during treatment.

What happens to your body during fasting?

According to Dr. Day, research shows that intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating activates a process in the body called autophagy. He explains, “It is a natural cleansing system in which damaged cells and toxins are taken out of the body. Studies have shown that this autophagy can reduce inflammation and abnormal cell growth. That means it can help in cancer prevention.”

Therefore, occasional fasting – such as an overnight fast lasting 12 to 14 hours – may be beneficial, although oncologists emphasize that it should be practiced only if you are in good health.

fasting and cancer

Dr. Dee emphasizes that fasting can help prevent cancer only when done by people in good health and that it is ineffective during cancer treatment.

He emphasizes, “It is very important to know that this may not have the same effect when you are undergoing cancer treatment. This includes treatments such as chemotherapy, surgery or radiotherapy. You cannot selectively kill cancer cells that have already formed by fasting. Cancer cells are already rogue, and during your fast, they take away the nutrition that should be going to your regular cells, allowing them to keep themselves alive.”

Oncologists highlight that when you are undergoing cancer treatment, your body needs extra calories, protein, and nutrients to maintain your body weight and strength, aid in treatment, and minimize side effects.

He emphasizes, “Malnutrition can impair healing. At this stage, a high-calorie, high-protein diet guided by a dietitian is most essential. Examples include smoothies, nut butters, eggs, lentils, cottage cheese, avocado and olive oil.”
