The Chennai police on Saturday claimed that the brutal murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Tamil Nadu chief K Armstrong by a group of assailants was not “political” in nature.
Armstrong was murdered by a group of unidentified men near his residence in Perambur on Friday evening.
Chennai Police Commissioner Sandeep Ray Rathore said eight suspects in the case were arrested within three hours of the murder.
“There’s no political aspect to this,” he said.
The officer said that every possible effort will be made to punish the accused.
According to the police, 10 special teams have been formed under the leadership of Additional Commissioner of Police (North) Asra Garg and its officers are investigating various angles.
Armstrong’s funeral will likely be held on Sunday.
Mayawati to visit Chennai
BSP supremo Mayawati on Saturday said she plans to visit Chennai on Sunday to pay tribute to Armstrong.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Mayawati said: “Given the gravity of this extremely sad and worrying incident, I plan to visit Chennai tomorrow morning to pay tribute to Mr Armstrong, meet his grieving family and console them. I appeal to all to maintain peace and order.”
Demanding immediate action from the Tamil Nadu government, the BSP supremo said: “The brutal murder of Sri K. Armstrong, a hardworking and dedicated leader of the BSP in Tamil Nadu and the party’s State unit president, outside his residence in Chennai yesterday evening has shocked the entire society. The government must take immediate strict/necessary action to prevent such incidents in future.”
Earlier on Saturday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed grief over the incident and offered his condolences to Armstrong’s family.
On Twitter, Stalin said, “The murder of Bahujan Samaj Party state president Shri Armstrong is shocking and extremely sad. The police arrested those involved in the murder overnight.”
Stalin said, “I would like to express my deepest condolences to all Armstrong’s party members, family, relatives and bereaved friends and I have ordered the police authorities to investigate the case expeditiously and bring the culprits to justice in accordance with the law.”
Meanwhile, on Saturday, BSP workers gathered outside the mortuary of Chennai’s Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, where Armstrong’s body has been kept for post-mortem. They also attempted to break barricades to enter the hospital premises.
BSP supporters also staged a ‘road block’ protest in Chennai.
