New Delhi. Bharat Samachar Nigam Limited i.e. BSNL’s data has been breached. This claim has been made in a report by digital risk management firm Athenian Tech. According to ET, this report states that hackers have accessed the personal information of customers. This includes International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) number, SIM card details, home location and many important security numbers. This is the second such incident within 6 months. Earlier, a case of breach came to light in December 2023.
Talking to ET, Athenian’s tech chief executive Kanishka Gaur said that Kiberphant0m has taken responsibility for this data breach. In this breach, 278 GB of BSNL data has gone to the hackers. They also have server snapshots which can be used to clone SIMs and for other criminal activities. The hacker has put this data up for sale at Rs 4,17,000. Gaur said that the data breach that has happened is very complex and important which will not only affect the common user but can also prove fatal for a major operational system of BSNL.

Hackers can use this data for cyber attack. This has not only endangered BSNL but has also raised a question mark on national security. Apart from this, using SIM card information, hackers can access someone’s financial information and then steal their property. The last data breach that happened had fiber and landline user data.
Now the data breach can affect BSNL’s telecommunication operations, network details and mode of operation. Gaur says that BSNL should immediately start an investigation into this matter and control this breach immediately. He also said that BSNL needs to increase its security standards.
