NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick is in the news again for his latest video that captured a bright green meteor exploding in the night sky above Earth. The commander of the SpaceX Crew-8 mission on the International Space Station (ISS) shared a new series of timelapse photos.
The camera located above Cairo, Egypt clearly captured a bright green explosion at 5:42 am (IST) on Monday, September 3. This happened when the astronaut was trying to take a shot of the center of the galaxy. The fireball explosion shown in the timelapse resulted from the disintegration of the meteor after it entered the Earth’s atmosphere.
“I showed this to a few friends yesterday to see what they thought,” wrote Matthew Dominick on the social media platform X. “They both thought it was a meteor exploding in the atmosphere – a very bright meteor called a bolide,” he added.
Taking into account the curiosity and appreciation of cosmos enthusiasts and sky watchers for the wonders of the universe, Matthew Dominick shared a timelapse slowed down to one frame per second. This allows us to see the meteor brighten and then explode. The clip, captured from inside the space station’s Cupola module, consists of 20 separate photos. “When I went to review the shots later, I found the bolide,” Matthew Dominick said.
The astronaut shared another version of the timelapse in the comments section of the post, a longer and faster frame, with the caption, “Interesting to compare the size of the bolide explosion with other objects such as the Mediterranean Sea, Cairo or lightning strikes.”
In the intense version, the meteor appears as a brief flash at the top right of the frame.
Matthew Dominic has emerged as a prolific space photographer with stunning shots of aurora, moon, lightning, nebulae and more. The viral post garnered over 32.01 lakh views and over 21,000 likes in just a few days.
