What causes kidney fungus?

“The kidneys can be involved in fungal infections in different ways. The most common way is for the fungal infection to spread through the bloodstream from another location, such as the lungs. However, it is possible that the fungal infection may primarily affect the kidneys and present with symptoms,” said Dr Ayan Kumar Dey.

Early symptoms of kidney fungus to know:

To prevent kidney fungus from becoming serious, it is important to recognize the early symptoms and initiate proper diagnosis. “Common symptoms like burning sensation while urinating, pain while urinating, lower abdominal pain, blood in urine can point towards the possibility of a urinary tract infection. “Further investigation by the treating physician and clinical correlation may rule out and confirm the presence of fungal infection in the kidney,” the nephrologist said. However, the presence of fungus in urine does not always indicate fungal infection. “The mere presence of yeast cells in the urine or the presence of fungal growth in a single urine sample without any signs of infection does not always require treatment. However, if patients have risk factors and are due to have some urological intervention, or have a kidney transplant, they can be subjected to antifungal treatment,” explained Dr Ayan Kumar Dey.

What preventive measures should be taken?

Kidney fungus may seem scary, but it can be cured with proper diagnosis and treatment. “Patients should ensure timely and regular follow-up with their physicians, nephrologists and infectious disease specialists to ensure adequate and complete treatment. Failure to eliminate the fungal infection can result in repeated infections, long-term scarring or damage to the kidneys,” said Dr Ayan Kumar Dey.
