Bleeding Eye Virus or Marburg Virus is a deadly disease which has taken the lives of 15 people so far. Know the origin, symptoms and management methods.

In seventeen countries, warnings have been issued for travelers against the Marburg virus. Also called bleeding eye virus due to one of its symptoms, Marburg virus has so far killed 15 people in Rwanda. It is believed that at least more than a hundred people are affected by this virus. What is Marburg virus?

Marburg or bleeding eye virus is a member of the Ebola family, which can cause viral hemorrhagic fever, leading to blood vessel damage and bleeding. Marburg virus is zoonotic in nature, originating from fruit bats and spread to humans by direct contact with bodily fluids such as blood, urine or saliva. Symptoms of Marburg virus to be wary of:

The symptoms of bleeding eye virus are very similar to the symptoms of Ebola. People affected by the virus experience high fever, severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting and sore throat, rash and diarrhea. In severe cases, hemorrhagic eye virus can cause internal bleeding, organ failure, and shock, which can lead to death. Unexplained weight loss, bleeding from the nose, eyes, mouth or vagina and confusion are some of the symptoms of the virus in the fatal stage.

Treatment of Marburg virus:

The mortality rate from bleeding eye virus ranges from 24% to 88%, depending on the condition and available medical care. However, there is no specific antiviral treatment available for Marburg virus. Rehydration and symptom management can help manage the condition. Experimental vaccines are in the early stages of study, and potential treatments such as blood products, immune therapies, and drug treatments are currently being evaluated.
