Black Doves review: Keira Knightley makes her television debut as Helen Webb, the lovely wife of the UK Defense Minister, or is she really Daisy Bradshaw, a spy for a shady organization known as the Black Doves Are you a long-term worker? What is the conspiracy?
While the plot description makes Black Doves sound like a thrilling spy thriller, and it is, creator Joe Barton is more interested in the fatally flawed humans at the center of this story. Barton shows a willingness to defy genre expectations and inject sympathy into stock characters. Both Helen and Sam struggle to accept lost love, and while it’s a pleasure to see Knightley sink into a meaty role, it’s really Whishaw who is the emotional center of the show.
Whishaw’s Sam is an open wound, extremely capable but completely broken by the devastating impact of his profession on the love of his life. A lesser actor would have taken the easier action-hero option of showing Sam’s anger and frustration, but Whishaw chose to focus on the hurt. A brilliant scene in the second episode where a mobster threatens his former partner, while the camera slowly pans up to Whishaw’s expressive eyes, shows why he is one of the finest actors working today. Whishaw (and the writing) elevate what should have been a perfectly brilliant action romance.

Frankly, neither Whishaw nor Knightley seem to be the first choices for action heroes. In fact, the closest Whishaw has come to becoming a spy is his long-running role as the idiot Q in Daniel Craig’s version of James Bond. Still, they both acquit themselves well, helped by some tight and well-staged action sequences that lighten the show’s brutality with a dark comedic touch.
The show clocks in at a quick 6 episodes, thankfully avoiding the now-trademark Netflix bloat. Barton’s use of a dual timeline structure similar to Citadel: Honey Bunny helps keep things fresh, showing the audience the development of Helen and Sam’s relationship parallel to the present. The story also occasionally gets a jolt of excitement from the trials and tribulations of Williams, one half of an improv duo, played by the scene-stealing Ella Lily Hyland, who deserves her own spin-off. Is. However, one must take offense at the criminal underutilization of the great Sarah Lancashire as the Black Dove’s handler, Mrs. Reed.
Black Doves is the second London-set detective show to debut last week. The first is Michael Fassbender’s The Agency, an English-language remake of the French espionage procedural The Bureau. Both follow in the hallowed footsteps of Slow Horses and it’s not hard to imagine Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb sipping noodles soup while nodding off at Sam’s favorite Chinese restaurant.
This show is a must-watch for fans of character-driven action shows. Black Doves has already been renewed for a second season and it will be interesting to see how the show resolves some of the lingering complexities of its finale, particularly a twist that oddly echoes the ending of The Diplomat’s second season. reminds me of.
