The party’s city unit chief in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur and BJP leader Punit Tyagi has resigned amid sexual harassment allegations leveled by a Mumbai-based actress. Despite denying the claims, Tyagi stepped down to protect the party’s image, The Indian Express reported. The actress, who says she has acted in over 250 regional films, shared a video on Instagram and social media, accusing Tyagi of exploitation and mental distress for a long period of time.
The actress said in the video. “The BJP leader developed closeness with my…son by giving him gifts repeatedly and then started sending me bouquets and other gifts. I was living in Mumbai with my son after breaking up with my husband. The closeness of the BJP leader to my son and his good behavior towards me led me to think that I have got support in my life. We had an intimate relationship for a few months and later he distanced himself.
Saharanpur Senior Superintendent of Police Rohit Singh Sajwan confirmed that a police complaint has not been filed against Tyagi yet. The BJP leadership has neither issued any official comment regarding the situation nor any future action.
He further claimed, “I lodged a complaint with the UP Chief Minister, Prime Minister and top BJP leaders but no one paid attention.
Punit Tyagi vehemently denied the allegation but resigned from the post. Sending his resignation to BJP Uttar Pradesh President Chaudhary Bhupendra Singh, he said, “Nonetheless I am submitting my resignation because I do not want the image of our party to be tarnished by such statements… The truth will soon come out and I am ready to accept any decision taken by my party leadership. I am completely innocent.”
