Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared a video of a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader challenging his own party’s candidate from Tamluk Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal.
In the purported video, Tamluk BJP district general secretary Chandan Mandal said, “We pledge to defeat Abhijit Gangopadhyay by a margin of over 2 lakh votes.”
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, former judge of Calcutta High Court, is the BJP candidate from Tamluk Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal. He stepped down as judge of the Calcutta High Court and joined the BJP on 7 March. He said he would fight against the “injustice” and “corruption” of TMC.
The Tamluk seat has been a stronghold of the ruling Trinamool Congress since the party has held it since the 2009 elections. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had challenged him and said, “No matter where you contest from, we will defeat you in the elections.”
Gangopadhyay recently came into controversy when he was heard in a purported video clip saying that the “death knell of Mamata Banerjee” had started ringing.
TMC claimed that BJP’s Tamluk candidate wished for the death of the TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister, while the BJP said Gangopadhyay meant “political death of TMC”.
The video that surfaced on Thursday reportedly shows Gangopadhyay telling a reporter: “It seems the death knell of Mamata Banerjee has already started ringing.” Mint could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.
TMC leader and West Bengal minister Shashi Panja reacted to Gangopadhyay, saying, “(BJP leader) Abhijit Gangopadhyay, you should be ashamed of yourself. Your (BJP) DNA is bad. You want Mamata Banerjee to die but the people of West Bengal have kept her alive. Be it you or (BJP leader) Dilip Ghosh, whatever you all are doing will come to the notice of the Election Commission.”
