Solar eclipse fever has hit North America hard ahead of the April 8 event. Local officials anticipate a huge increase in tourist numbers as millions of people tune in to witness this rare astronomical phenomenon. The total solar eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean and Mexico’s Pacific coast will become the first place to experience totality at approximately 11:07 a.m. PDT (approximately 11:30 p.m. IST). Against this backdrop, Bill Nye ‘The Science Guy’ has shared several tips to watch the upcoming event.

What is solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon and Earth line up and the Moon’s shadow falls on the Earth. While the satellite is about 400 times smaller than the Sun, it is also about 400 times closer to the Sun. Therefore, they appear to be of the same size from the earth’s surface. In a total solar eclipse the Sun is ‘blocked’ by the Moon for a few minutes before the celestial bodies continue their orbit around the Sun.
How can we see the eclipse?
“The pinhole viewer is great. If you’ve never made one, it’s nothing special: just make a small hole. And something I’ve had great success with is take something like a shoe box or a large cardboard box and cut a hole in one end, as big as – pick a number: a ping pong ball; As big as the circle of your thumb and forefinger — and then tape a piece of aluminum foil over that hole, and then take a pin and make a small hole,” Nee told the publication.
He suggested aluminum foil as an alternative, noting that the thickness of cardboard might ruin the experience somewhat. The image will be larger if the distance between the pinhole and the object one is trying to view at the other end of the box is greater.
