Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday inaugurated a part of the International Sports Complex in Rajgir, Bihar’s first sports academy and Bihar Sports University on the occasion of Sports Day.
On the occasion, former Indian hockey captain and Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey announced that Rajgir will host the National Asian Women’s Hockey Championship in November.
Built on 90 acres of land and constructed at a cost of 1.5 crores This international sports complex, being built at a cost of Rs 740 crore, is in many ways the only sports complex in the country where training will be provided in 24 sports simultaneously. Here players will be provided all facilities including training, accommodation, food and medical in a single campus.
Kumar had announced the construction of a sports academy in Rajgir in 2007. It includes a main cricket stadium as well as eight smaller stadiums, a world-class sports library and training centres for various sports. The main stadium will have a seating capacity of around 50,000 spectators, while the smaller stadiums will have a seating capacity of 10,000 spectators.
The project is not just limited to cricket, it also includes facilities for athletics, football, hockey, volleyball, kabaddi and many other sports. Apart from this, a state-of-the-art hospital, fitness centre and sports research facilities are also proposed.
On this occasion, nine international players of the state were also felicitated and given cash prizes and honours as per their achievements. An exhibition match of the Asian Games winner Indian women’s hockey team was also organised on the newly constructed hockey turf.

About Bihar Sports University
To promote sports education in the state of Bihar in the fields of physical education, sports science, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching as well as to function as a high-level research training centre for sports, the state government has approved the establishment of ‘Bihar Sports University’ in July 2021.

IAS (2011) Rajnikant, who took VRS from the post of Lakhisarai DM, has been appointed as the Registrar of Bihar Sports Directorate. He will also look after the work of Vice Chancellor till the appointment of the first Vice Chancellor.
