Health experts explain the unseen effects of epilepsy on one’s mental health

,

Depression, anxiety, stress, and cognitive impairment are a common occurrence in patients with epilepsy. Epilepsy occurs when someone has unexpected seizures. In an interview with HT Lifestyle's Zarafshan Shiraz, Dr Priyanka Teter, neurologist at Zinova Shalabi Hospital, explained, “Although it affects people of all ages, it often develops in childhood or later adulthood. While the most well-known symptom of epilepsy is convulsions, there are several other symptoms to be aware of. These may include temporary confusion or loss of awareness, unusual sensations such as tingling or strange tastes or smells, and staring spells where the person appears unresponsive.''(Photo from Shutterstock)

According to Dr. Priyanka Teter, “Some people with epilepsy experience repetitive movements like blinking or chewing, but they are unable to control them. It is important to note that symptoms can vary widely from person to person and may change from person to person over time. Some people with epilepsy are also known to display emotional symptoms such as fear and anxiety before having a seizure. (Photo from Pixabay)

Talking about how epilepsy impacts one's mental health, Dr. Priyanka Teter said, “The fear of experiencing a seizure can cause anxiety and distress, especially in social or academic settings. Epilepsy can also interfere with your daily activities, such as education, work, social interactions and travel. It is common for people with epilepsy to feel anxious or depressed before a seizure and to experience emotional turmoil afterward as the brain recovers. These different aspects of living with epilepsy can result in mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, eating disorders, loneliness, cognitive impairment, or obsessive-compulsive behavior. Understanding epilepsy goes beyond recognizing its physical symptoms as many individuals also face stigma and misconceptions that can have a profound impact on their lives. For example, the fear of having a seizure in public can lead to social isolation and anxiety, which can add emotional burden to an already challenging situation.''(Photo by Frank Sorge/IMAGO)

Dr. Priyanka Teter elaborated, “Memory problems and difficulty concentrating are common in individuals with this disorder, which affects their ability to perform daily tasks and their overall quality of life. In addition to medication side effects that can affect mood or cognition, frequent doctor visits and lifestyle changes can contribute to feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. Specialists must recognize these mental health challenges in patients with epilepsy and provide comprehensive support beyond simply managing the physical aspects of the condition.

Concluding, Dr. Priyanka Teter advised, “When addressing mental health needs in epilepsy care, specialists should take a holistic approach that integrates mental health support into the overall treatment plan. This may include regular screening for depression and anxiety as well as active discussions about the potential mental health effects of epilepsy. Implementing collaborative care models that involve both neurologists and mental health professionals can be highly effective in addressing the complex interrelationship between epilepsy and psychological well-being. Providing education is essential to empower patients and their families to recognize the signs of declining mental health and seek appropriate support. Incorporating stress reduction techniques such as mindfulness-based interventions or cognitive-behavioral therapy can help manage the emotional toll of living with epilepsy. By prioritizing an integrated approach that places equal emphasis on physical and mental well-being, it is possible to improve the patient's overall quality of life.
