Fungal skin infections can affect you not only during the monsoon season but also in the warmer months of September and October. According to the National Institute of Health, about 4.1% of Indians suffer from serious fungal diseases. Here are some quick tips to protect yourself from these dangerous infections even after the monsoon is over.

What are fungal infections of the skin?

These diseases, known as dermatomycosis, are caused by fungal growth on the skin, hair or nails. Fungi such as yeast and dermatophytes thrive on a protein called keratin, which is found in the skin, hair and nails. The most common infections are:

1. Athlete’s foot (affecting the toes and the skin between the fingers),

2. Shingles (which can affect any area of ​​the body) and

3. Jock itch (which affects the groin area).

Causes of fungal infection of the skin

Dr. Aditi Dalvi Deshpande, MBBS, MD Dermatology, Renee Skin Clinic, Mumbai, explained that such infections are most common in places that remain warm and moist. These include areas such as the groin, under the breasts, between the toes, and skin folds. Also, sweat buildup can contribute to fungal infections of the skin. Therefore, according to Dr. Deshpande, it is advisable to bathe at least once a day, or even twice if you are particularly active or sweat profusely.

Dr Swathika S of Chennai-based Dr Swathika’s Skin and Cosmetic Clinic suggests wearing natural fabrics like cotton – they are better as they allow the skin to breathe and reduce moisture accumulation. Dr Swathika also advises avoiding synthetic fabrics that can trap sweat.

In addition, a weakened immune system is more susceptible to infections. To boost your immune system, it is important to eat a diet rich in probiotics, such as yogurt and fermented foods.

Symptoms of a fungal infection of the skin

The Cleveland Clinic notes the following symptoms of a fungal infection of the skin:

1. Itching, pain, redness or rash in the affected area.

2. Nails become discolored, thick, or cracked.

3. Pain while eating, loss of taste or white patches in the mouth or throat.

4. A painless lump under your skin.

Treatment

Fungal infections of the skin are usually treated with topical antifungal creams or even antifungal medication taken orally. The duration of the infection depends, with mild infections lasting 2-4 weeks and more severe infections lasting several months. Prevention
