The Bangladesh government has written a letter to India seeking the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after she was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT), AFP reports.
In a statement on November 23, Bangladesh’s government said it has asked India to extradite the 78-year-old leader, who has fled the country and is in hiding in India since the overthrow of his autocratic regime in August 2024.
‘Sent a letter demanding extradition’
Tauheed Hossain, who is in charge of foreign affairs in Bangladesh’s interim administration, told reporters that on Friday “we had sent a letter demanding the extradition of Sheikh Hasina.”
He did not elaborate on the contents of the letter, which according to Bengali newspaper Prothom Alo was the third official extradition request since Hasina’s escape.
Following the court verdict on Monday, which convicted Hasina of crimes against humanity and was sentenced to death, the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka said in a statement that Delhi had an “obligatory responsibility” under the bilateral treaty to facilitate the former leader’s return.
In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it had “noted” the decision without commenting directly on the extradition request.
It did not immediately respond to Dhaka’s latest letter.
Bangladesh student revolt: 1,400 people killed in Hasina’s crackdown
Bangladesh has been in political turmoil since the end of Hasina’s rule and violence has marred campaigning for elections in February 2026.
The United Nations says 1,400 people were killed in a crackdown when Hasina tried to seize power, the deaths at the center of her trial.
India’s past support for Hasina has strained relations between the two neighbors since her overthrow, the AFP report said.
It said tensions eased slightly when Bangladesh’s National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman visited India this week for the regional security summit and met his counterpart Ajit Doval.
Media reports in Bangladesh said Rahman has invited Doval for a visit.
