Indians love to drink tea or coffee, as these two beloved beverages are deeply ingrained in our culture. But is it healthy? Recently, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in partnership with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) released dietary guidelines for healthy living.
In one of the guidelines, the medical apex body has suggested moderation in consumption of the two beloved beverages to encourage healthy eating habits across the country.
ICMR has warned against excessive consumption of tea and coffee and advised people not to consume them just before or after meals.
“Tea and coffee contain caffeine, which stimulates the central nervous system and induces physical dependence,” ICMR researchers said.
Although the researchers did not ask people to completely avoid tea or coffee, they cautioned about the caffeine content in these beverages.
“Moderation in tea and coffee consumption is recommended so that caffeine intake does not exceed the tolerable limit (300 mg/day),” the researchers said.
It is important to note that a cup of brewed coffee contains 80-120 mg of caffeine, instant coffee contains 50-65 mg and tea contains 30-65 mg.
ICMR researchers recommended avoiding tea or coffee for at least an hour before and after meals as they contain tannins, which can reduce the absorption of iron in the body.
The researchers said tannins bind with iron in the stomach, making it harder for the body to properly absorb the iron. This can cause health problems like iron deficiency and anemia.

He further said that excessive coffee consumption can also lead to high blood pressure and cardiovascular irregularities.
ICMR guidelines also suggest drinking tea without milk as it has several benefits, such as improving blood circulation and reducing the risk of conditions like coronary artery disease and colon cancer.
