New Delhi: Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon has expressed shock and grief over the brutal beating of Hindu boy Utsav Mandal in Bangladesh. Raveena Tandon has shared a post on her X handle regarding the incident, the caption of which reads, ‘Heartbroken. This world is returning to the dark medieval era.’ Utsav is accused of making derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad on social media.
Initially, rumours surfaced that Utsav Mandal had succumbed to his injuries, but Bangladesh’s Khulna Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (South) Mohammad Tajul Islam told India Today that the teenager is alive and is undergoing treatment. Raveena Tandon had earlier condemned the violence against minorities in Bangladesh. She wrote, ‘I stand with the victims and appeal to end this violence soon. It is important that leaders around the world and especially the powerful people of India speak out against these atrocities and work together to protect the rights and dignity of all people. We should not remain silent in the face of such evil.’

Uproar over ‘objectionable comment’
The incident in Bangladesh took place at night when a group of madrasa students brought 15-year-old Utsav Mandal to the police station and accused him of making ‘objectionable comments’ about Prophet Muhammad on Facebook. As the news spread, tension escalated and most of the students and members of the Imam Association gathered outside the station and demanded strict punishment for the boy.
When Utsav Mandal was in police custody
According to Mohammad Tajul Islam, the students initially appealed for Utsav to be punished according to their laws. They even demanded that he be hanged. According to a report by AyraNews24x7 English, despite the deputy commissioner’s assurance that legal action would be taken under existing laws, the rioters were unsatisfied. There was a moment when a false announcement was made through the mosque’s loudspeaker, claiming that Utsav had been murdered, causing the crowd to disperse for a moment. However, when it became clear that he was still alive and in police custody, tensions rose again. The crowd demanded that Utsav be handed over to them.
