Guilan-Bere case update: As of February 1, 2025, Maharashtra belongs to the outbreak of the Guilan-Baire syndrome (GBS), which reports 149 suspected cases and five suspected deaths.

The state health department confirmed that out of these, 124 patients have been diagnosed with GBS, a rare autoimmune disorder, where the immune system attacks peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness and potentially paralysis.

Dangerous, 28 persons in Maharashtra are currently on ventilator support as the situation can severely affect the respiratory muscles.

“Of these, GBS has been confirmed to 124 patients. Among the affected persons, 28 are currently on ventilator support ”, Maharashtra Health Department said on Saturday.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is actively examining the outbreak, although no definite reason has been established so far. Initial trials have revealed the presence of the bacterial campilobacter Jejuni in some feces samples from the affected patients, which is associated with GBS. Experts suggest that contaminated water sources may contribute to this bounce in Guilan-Berre cases, especially in Pune, where a group of infections has been noted.

Most of the cases recorded in the state are from Pune and surrounding areas.

E. Koli found in water sample from Pune

A total of 160 water samples from various parts of Pune City were sent to the public health laboratory for chemical and biological analysis, and samples from eight water sources were found to be contaminated.

An official said that Eschherichia Koli or E. Koli bacteria was found in one of the samples obtained from private borewells in Sinhagad Road area.

He said that e. Koli in water is a sign of stool or animal waste contamination, and the prevalence of bacteria can lead to GBS infection.

After the increase in GBS cases in Nanded, in other areas on Kirkatwadi, Dhyari and Sinhagad Road, Pune Municipal Corporation is collecting water samples from borewells and Wales for investigation.

Symptoms of Guilan-Barre Syndrome

The following are symptoms of Guilain-Baire syndrome for which you should look out:

muscle weakness: Weapon or paralysis in weapons and legs, which can affect both sides of the body

Numbness: Tinge, numbness, or pin and needles in the hands and feet

Pain: Fast in the feet or back, shooting pain, or muscle pain, pain, or cramps

Breathing problems: Breathing of breath, difficulty in breathing, or breathing muscle paralysis

vision problems: Blurred vision or dual vision

Dizziness: Lighthead or dizzy

Coordination problems: Slightning, uncontrolled movements, or problems

Heart and blood pressure problems: Abnormal heart rate or blood pressure, or low or hypertension

Digestive and bladder problems: Dull bowel function, difficulty with bladder control, or urinary retention

Complications may also include blood clots, blood transfusions and heart arrests
