Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan recently made his directorial debut with the Netflix web series, The Ba**ads of Bollywood. Amid the controversy over the defamation suit filed by IRS officer Sameer Wankhede against him, Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix, in an interview with Variety, Aryan said that he wanted to be ‘self-deprecating’ with the series and not ‘defamatory’.
Aryan Khan on humor in The Ba**ds of Bollywood
Aryan said in the interview that the team of the series has set parameters regarding creative limitations. “We wanted to be self-deprecating, but didn’t want to be disrespectful anywhere. So I think we held that line right, and the guardrails themselves were put in place, mostly because, making something about the industry and being part of the industry, there has to be — there’s a lot of respect,” he said.
He also said, “I think people being able to take jokes on themselves is the first and most important thing about comedy. Take jokes on yourself and then spread the love. People were extremely sporty, and we also tried not to cross the boundaries in terms of being offensive, just being self-deprecating.”
Aryan also said in the interview that the series had scenes inspired by ‘certain realities’ and they have been exaggerated as it is ‘not a documentary’. Bollywood Badasses stars Lakshya, Bobby Deol, Raghav Juyal, Anya Singh, Manoj Pahwa, Manish Chaudhary, Sahhar Bamba, Gautami Kapoor, Rajat Bedi and others, with cameos by Shah Rukh, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, SS Rajamouli, Disha Patani and others.
Sameer Wankhede’s defamation case
While Aryan’s web series left people guessing as to who he was referring to in Bollywood, the biggest fallout was that Sameer filed a defamation suit in the Delhi High Court, alleging that the series had tarnished his reputation. he is looking for Rs 2 crore in damages, which he wants to donate to Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital for cancer patients. On October 8, the HC issued a summons to Shah Rukh-owned Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix as well as X Corp (formerly Twitter), Google LLC, Meta Platform, RPSG Lifestyle Media Pvt Ltd and John Doe and fixed the case for hearing on October 30.
For those unaware, Sameer was the officer in the Cordelia case in 2022, where a cruise ship was raided, and Aryan was detained for possessing drugs. The case against the debutant director was later dropped, after he spent 25 days in jail before getting bail. Later, Sameer was removed from the case after being accused of blackmail. In May 2023, the Bombay High Court accepted his plea seeking quashing of the CBI FIR alleging bribery.
