What happens when life throws unexpected turns at you or in singer Arjun Kanungo’s case – a broken hip made him take up the challenge of quitting music until he gets his abs back? Arjun, who has been missing for quite some time, recently opened up about his absence on his social media handles. He opened up about the most challenging 18 months of his life, from a surprising kidney problem to a freak hip fracture in the Maldives, he found himself bedridden, overweight and questioning his future in music.
Arjun captioned the video, “I’ll tell you about the crazy decision I made to gain 30 kilos, hit 117 kilos at my heaviest and put my music career on hold to get abs. You’ll hear about my experience with veganism, the physiotherapist who saved me from surgery and the difficult process of losing 27 kilos while battling self-doubt and pain. It’s not just about a physical transformation – it’s about rediscovering my purpose and passion for music.”
“With only 30 days left in my challenge, I’m sharing the ups and downs, the difficult food choices, and the mental battle that comes with such a huge lifestyle change. Whether you’re a fan of my music or just looking for some inspiration, this story is about bounce back, determination, and the power of taking risks.”
Arjun Kanungo’s shocking injury in Maldives changed his life
In the viral video, Arjun says, “I suddenly had some kidney issues because I was eating a lot of protein and I was in the best shape of my life. I was looking great. I was bulked up, I was super tired and I don’t know what happened but you know, I had some kidney issues and the doctor said to me, ‘Hey, you know what? Why don’t you go vegan for a while and get this sorted out because, you know, if you don’t look after it properly it can become a problem?'”
The pop star revealed that it was a serious kidney injury and as per the advice, he decided to make some changes in his lifestyle and went vegan for 6 months but the following month he fractured his hip while on a remote island in the Maldives. “It was like a horror story. Like they had to lift me up and put me on a wheelchair and I mean I don’t know if I had a fracture at that point but I can tell you it was the worst pain of my life. Like I can’t even imagine anybody could go through that pain,” Arjun recalled.
Realising that it was no ordinary injury as he could not sit, stand or lie down, he got an MRI done which revealed that he had suffered a hip fracture, which is a serious problem at Arjun’s age. He said, “I am still so young that I have a hip fracture…it happens to people in their 60s. The doctor told me that ‘listen, it will take a long time to heal and you will need surgery’ and I was not happy with that, so I was quite upset because the statistics are very weird. I did some research and it basically means that if you have a hip surgery then there is a 50-60% chance that in 6 months you will have to have a hip surgery again.”
Arjun Kanungo – From bed to chopped
Frustrated, Arjun took this as his life, so I thought okay, someone referred him to Tamar, a physiotherapist at 206 Optimum Fitness, who has a clinic in Bandra, Mumbai. She assured him that she had seen cases like this before and could fix it without any surgery, but it was going to be painful. Arjun fractured his hip on February 15, 2023 and reached Tamar in early March. By mid-April, he was walking normally again and by early May, he was feeling like himself again.
Though he did not realise at the time that being completely bedridden, going vegetarian, having no protein and exercising was taking a toll on him, he could not take any painkillers due to the kidney injury. Arjun said, “It was like a comedy of errors. I could not understand how this happened to me and I gained a lot of weight. I became very fat.”
Becoming “super heavy”, Arjun decided to take up a fitness routine and started doing some workouts in June 2023. He gained around 27-30 kgs and started looking three times his size, while he weighed 117 kgs in August last year.
He said, “I had about 31% body fat which is basically obese and I don’t know if it’s obese or not but it’s a lot of fat and I was not happy with my body. I didn’t feel comfortable with my body. I didn’t want to be in front of the camera. I didn’t want to do anything. I didn’t want to make music. I had to release my album because I had already promised it to a lot of my partners. So, we released it. We didn’t do any tour. I know a lot of you were disappointed about not touring.”
Music vs. Muscles
Promising his fans to get into the best shape of their lives, Arjun worked really hard between August 2023 and January 2024, losing about 10 kilos but decided not to stop until he gets abs by September 2024. He is still determined to quit music if he fails in his fitness challenge, though he is almost there and has less than half a month left despite weighing 90 kg.
Revealing how he achieved this in such a short time, Arjun said, “In June, I started swimming, going to the pool, walking in the pool, running in the pool and by August I was back into it. I was in the gym – running again, feeling better, no hip pain, thanks to Tamara, thanks to all my trainers.” In the last 30 days now Arjun admitted that he hates his food as he has been eating salads and grilled chicken for the last 18 months whereas he craves burgers, ice cream, french fries and “fun things”.
Talking about turning vegetarian, he said, “I was vegetarian for 6 months until my kidneys healed and that made my kidneys better. OK? So, I think there’s an advantage to not eating meat. I didn’t eat any dairy products, nothing.”
He added, “I think it solved my kidney problem, my creatine came back up, all my blood markers went great. They’re still great though, so it’s been about a year since I’ve been vegan and maybe a case can be made for both sides.”
He advised, “If I can get through this, you can too. I think it has been very educative for me. I lost 27 kilos in 18 months, lost 20% body fat. I was 31% body weight, which is now down to 10%.”
