Working in different time zones, using gadgets just before going to bed, and magnesium deficiency – all these factors disrupt the sleep cycle.
The way we work and the timings we follow have a huge impact on our sleep patterns. Healthy sleep is extremely important for the proper healthy functioning of the body. Healthy sleep helps the body to re-charge and refresh itself for physical functions. Sleep also has a psychological effect on the body – good sleep helps us feel better and happier. It helps improve mood and boost creativity and productivity. However, our work patterns and timings can have a serious impact on our sleep routine.
Effect of sunlight on the body’s circadian rhythm:
Dr. Samata Tulla, MD Internal Medicine, explained how the body’s circadian rhythm is affected by sunlight in a podcast episode with Murali Mastaru. Dr. Samata Tulla explained that since ancient times, humans have been working with the sun – the sun helps maintain the body’s circadian rhythm. People used to eat food and do physical labor in sunlight, and after the sun set, people used to sleep due to the absence of artificial light. Therefore, the body is trained to be in sync with the sun. However, with the recent shift timings of jobs where people work in different time zones, people are not able to get enough sleep at night. This affects the body’s circadian rhythm.

How to improve melatonin production?
Dr. Samatha Tulla explained that melatonin is a natural hormone that helps improve sleep patterns. However, melatonin production can be disrupted due to blue light from screens or gadget use right before bedtime. Eating too close to bedtime can also affect melatonin production. When the body is deficient in magnesium – it can affect melatonin production and disrupt the sleep cycle. The doctor further explained that melatonin is not only a sleep-inducing hormone, but also an antioxidant that provides a variety of benefits for the body.
