100% tariff’s Donald Trump’s announcement on foreign films has given various reactions. Anurag Basu considers it an opportunity to flourish of Indian cinema.
US President Donald Trump on Monday took the truth social to announce a 100% tariff plan on all the films outside the United States. While the proposed tariff’s nuances remain unclear, especially in the context of how can influence foreign films including Indian cinema in North America, some Indian filmmakers are looking at development with vigilant optimism.
Director Anurag Basu shared his vision in an interview with Zoom and said, “Trump’s tariff on Indian films can be a blessing. If we react with the same tariff on Hollywood films in India, it can run more audiences towards domestic cinema. The high ticket prices for foreign blockbusters are more than to choose any revenue.
Anurag believes that if India had to implement mutual tariffs on Hollywood release, it can cause significant changes in view, the local film industry benefits the industry culturally and economically in a long time.
Trump puts 100% tariffs on films made outside us
Trump’s original post reads, “Our film making business has been stolen by other countries from the United States, such as stealing candy from a child. California, with its weak and disabled governor, has been a particularly tough hit! Therefore, to solve this long -finished problem, I will apply a 100% tarf to the United States.
Earlier, Bajrangi Bhaijaan director Kabir Khan also shared his two cents on Trump’s tariff announcement. Kabir criticized Trump’s proposed 100% tariff on foreign films and said that the policy lacks clarity and logic. He questioned what tax really would be levied, indicating that almost every Hollywood production involves foreign shoots and post-production.
